More destruction than construction
So it’s been a few weeks since my first post and I thought it was time I gave you an update on the Squirrel Cave. Not much has happened yet. I’m pleased to say work has been taking priority. But there have been a few things done. The idea was to make the door a bit taller, even for me It was a little on the low side. A debate began regarding the possibility of it being a load bearing wall but the conclusion was that it was not and that knocking a few breeze blocks out above the existing door should be straight forward.
So one Saturday morning, armed with hammer, chisel, crowbar and assisted by my dad work began to remove the existing door and frame. The door was the easy part. The frame put up a bit of a struggle when we found it was secured to the floor, as well as the wall. The wall itself proved to be a bridge too far.
Above the existing door we discovered a concrete lintel. ‘Not a problem’ says my dad. ‘It’s probably only a little bit longer than the door. We’ll put a new one in higher up and take this one out.’ So we chop the wall out along the lintel and found it went a long way further than the doorway.
This did not look good. Coffee and digestives were called for. While we took a break we came to the conclusion that neither of us fancied the idea of wrestling this out of the wall. Not to mention the amount of chopping out needed to put in a replacement further up. After another cup of coffee we decided the best course of action would be to re-plaster the hole we had made in the wall, put the door frame back where we found it and I would just have to learn to duck.
So much for the construction process. Next stage, plaster.
On the plus side however I have my first item of ‘furnishing’ for the cave.
I was given this beauty by a friend. I absolutely love it. For those who know me, you know I love dogs, and this little fella is just so cute he has to be part of the office. I haven’t decided on a colour scheme or anything for the cave yet but I’m thinking it’ll be a bit of a mix and match affair. I’m now on the lookout for a desk and chair. Ebay is my current best friend. I know what I like, it’s just about getting it to fit.
