Time to Celebrate!

Happy Birthday JuliaVDesign

This week is a big week for JuliaVDesign. 11th April marks one year since I left the safety of

employment and became a full time Freelance Graphic Designer. The decision to go it alone was not one I made for myself. It was thrust upon me by circumstances, but twelve months on I think it was one of the best things i’ve ever done. For a long time I wanted more variety than I was getting from my day job and had been taking occasional freelance work for a couple of years. But when I was made redundant in April 2016 I had to up my game. I wasn’t just going to wait for another full time role to come my way so after a weekend of feeling sorry for myself I got up on Monday morning determined to achieve something. I got a set of business cards ordered, emailed all my clients and booked myself into a small business expo.

Of course just because you have a business card doesn’t mean you suddenly have a business and clients. Jobs were here and there for a while. I had a lot of time to work on my website and social media and to go to as many networking events as I could find in my area. This year has been a steep learning curve. I’ve had to learn how to use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for business. I’ve faced my fears and stood in front of a room of 80 people and introduced myself and my business. I’ve met amazing people who have given me great advise I’ve even held an Eagle while networking! How cool is that?

I’m not going to pretend that the first year has been easy going. There have been tears, frustrations and countless hours of self doubt but there have also been some amazing highs. I still have a long way to go in my journey of self employment but one thing I learned early on was that anything is possible, and if you want something enough it will happen and that has started to come true. The year ahead looks full of opportunities to build on the foundations I have lain. I’m looking forward to meeting the new wave of people just starting on their self employed journey and hopefully being able to help them in the same way others have helped me.

I would like to say a big thank you to my friends and family who have been my cheer squad this year. Helping me believe in myself. Also a big thank you to the BedsHour gang, your friendship and advise has been amazing. Thank you everyone. Lets see where the next year takes me.
